If you’re the type of Seasoned Woman who has many ideas in her head and can’t seem to settle on one, you’ll get what I’m talking about in this post. Sometimes it can be almost painful to have a lot of interests and not be able to settle on one. The mantra for today from coaches and consultants is “just find your niche” not do everything you can. Getting to success often means focusing on one of two ideas at the most. But when your head won’t stop spouting out ideas, it can be difficult.
My problem is that I love working with business and marketing them but I’m also into raw/vegan foods. Of course, business people as well as all others must eat. More often than not, people of all ages are asking me about my diet. From young people to seniors, the interest in how to eat more plant-based foods is growing. So that should probably be my focus. Yet, I’m pretty entrenched in the business areas too. What to do?
When putting the problem out here like this, it doesn’t seem as bad. Just do them both, right? But as you know, when you’re dealing with how to build something from a lot of angles, you can get confused; and a confused mind always says “no.” So instead of moving ahead, you get stuck in one place, not getting anything done.
I need to make up my mind for sure in order to move ahead, and you might be in the same place. Here are some questions that intuitively came to mind the other day. Of course, this intuition doesn’t come from nothing, the base is a strong foundation of knowledge from years of experiences. That’s like what you have too. Inside of you is the answer to any question you have, you just need to listen to your heart to hear it. Unfortunately the voice of your heart is too often drowned out by the voice in your head that wants to speak louder than any other voice. But here are some ideas I can share with you now.
First, stay within your scope. What that means is, sit down, figure out what you really know, and work within those parameters. That sounds like a no-brainer but it’s a lot more difficult than it sounds. When you have a lot of ideas, it’s easy to have what is known in the business world as “scope creep.” That means starting to work outside of your professional limitations. I think this could be a problem with health and wellness practitioners who have a bit of information on a lot of topics. Instead of staying within the limits of what you have been trained for, it’s easy to start suggesting solutions to particular health and wellness problems. But that can get you into trouble. So to develop a program you want to promote, figure out what you really know and what you have certification or license to practice with others. Go with that to start. If your list is still long, keep going.
Second, figure out what your passions are. Working in areas you don’t like won’t keep you going for long. It doesn’t take a lot to figure out what you really love. Just think about what you never grow tired of hearing, doing, or talking about. What could you go on and on about forever? That’s where the passion is. I know I have a lot of knowledge about organizations, business, marketing and so on. But my passion always has been and always will be the wonders of food as a healing agent. It fascinates me that foods can be the reason for bad health or the reason for good health. Yet, few people eat for health, but eat for convenience and end up with bad health. So knowing my passion yet trying to work in something else causes a huge problem. Where does your passion lie in the work areas?
Third, what areas do you have the most relevant updated experience in at this time? For instance, I’m in the middle of a 50 pound weight loss challenge (a personal challenge that is). So far, I’m 27 pounds down (YEAH!) with 23 pounds to go. You can imagine that I’m thinking about my health and wellness all the time. As I start getting into outfits that have sat in my closet literally for years, the excitement continues to grow. Look, don’t ask my why I kept clothes for years, some for 6 or 7 years, but I did. Now I’m glad. Some are fancy suits that don’t really go out of style and cost a lot. They have been my “goal clothes.” In fact, I sorta’ regret giving away so many of my smaller clothes now, but of course, this only means I need to get some new clothes. I’m also at the point where I want better styles that are more classic. If I had the old stuff, I’d probably try to wear those instead of getting new styles. The point is, what is right for you at this point in your life? What are you involved with and therefore, keeping updated on? Factor that into where you want to concentrate at this time.
Fourth, what will others pay you money for? You can have the most exciting hobbies in the world but that’s exactly what they’ll remain, a hobby, if no one wants to pay you to know more about them. Bottom line for doing a business, you have to make money with it. Honestly, one of my primary problems has been, I can understand charging people to learn more about how to market their business or make money with their business. I’ve made money doing that and it feels good. But it’s been difficult to think about charging people to know about food. To me, food is something to be shared freely; enjoyed by whoever wants. Charging to know about it seemed odd. Thank-goodness for my own good coaches, who have convinced me of the virtues of charging what’s appropriate, when it offers a benefit to the lives of others. So what will others pay you to share with them?
I’m sure I’ll come up with more thoughts on this, probably by tomorrow. But for right now, I just got an idea I want to develop so I need to move on and get busy working.
By the way, do you have a lot of ideas your suffering with that keep you stuck? Share your thinking on this in the comments section and let’s talk about it.
