Common Sleeping Problems

Pretty much everyone has had at least a little trouble sleeping at some point in their life. In fact, trouble sleeping is one of the most common reasons people visit the doctor.

One of the most common sleep problems is not being able to fall asleep at night. This may be caused by a variety of physical or mental factors. Here are a few tips to help you fall asleep faster at night so you can be rested when you wake up.

* Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
* Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol.
* Try meditation if your have anxious thoughts that keep you up.
* Try natural medications like herbal tea, warm milk, or lavender.

Sometimes trouble falling asleep is due to a medical problem that requires treatment from a doctor. Restless leg syndrome has become much more known in recent years. This is when your legs keep moving as you’re trying to fall asleep. This can often prevent you from sleeping at all. It is also associated with a more common leg disorder in which you kick in your sleep, which wakes you up in the middle of the night and disrupts sleeping patterns.

Many people have no trouble falling asleep at night, but then wake up a few hours later and can’t get back to sleep. While this is annoying, it may also be a sign of a more serious problem. If you snore loudly, you may be waking up due to sleep apnea. This is when you stop breathing in the middle of the night, sometimes for up to a minute, then wake up and start breathing again.

Many people with sleep apnea don’t even realize they wake up during the night; they simply don’t feel rested after a full night’s sleep (and with all that snoring, neither does their spouse). While your partner or spouse can often hear you stop breathing during the night, only a sleep study can accurately diagnose sleep apnea. Therefore it’s important that you see a doctor if your partner thinks you have an issue. Sleep apnea can be successfully treated leaving you healthier and feeling better.

Sleepwalking is when someone walks or does some other complicated activity in their sleep. This can often be dangerous because they can run into things and hurt themselves. They can even endanger others by doing things like driving while they’re sleeping. While sleepwalking is normally something that occurs in children, which they grow out of in time, it may occur in adults as well. You can take extra precautions by removing hazardous objects from the room, locking doors, or even setting up an alarm. Also check with a doctor to make sure sleepwalking isn’t caused by a medical condition and be sure to stay on a regular sleep cycle.

These are just a few of the sleep-related issues you may be facing. Many of them can successfully treated at home or at the doctor’s office, leaving you happy and well rested.
