Want a healthier brain? Eat a healthy diet. New research is showing that eating a diet filled with fresh fruits, vegetables and omega – 3 fats can be the best thing to help keep you from losing your memory and suffering from dementia. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Worldwide, 35.6 million people have dementia, with just over half (58%) living in low and middle income countries. Every year, there are 7.7 million new cases.” That means, the chances of having this problem is serious. The quesiotn might be why are so many people experiencing memory loss when there is so much good food around.
A lot of the problem is not knowing how to eat for brain health. The word is spreading that clean, whole foods are key to a healthy body, but little is mentioned about the need for these foods to keep the brain healthy. In fact, most people just assume that memory loss, dementia and worse, Alzheimer’s disease will be their eventual path. But this doesn’t have to be.
What is known is that memory loss can occur from the result of diseases that affect the brain directly or indirectly such as diabetes, midlife hypertension, midlife obesity, smoking and physical inactivity and of course, Alzheimer’s disease or stroke. Lifestyle factors that enter the equation are age, stress levels, quality and length of sleep, medications, and nutrition.
But more is being discussed about it how a diet filled with flavonoids, a chemical compound that gives fruit and leafy green vegetables their color can help to support a healthy brain. Other foods food to be particularly good for brain health include berries, all leafy greens, omega-3 rich fish and, surprise, coffee.
